Training Services

For specific training services I have designed and can provide please see Training Products. These can be adapted through co-creation to your specific needs.

As a volunteer for Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) I taught English to students in Port Sudan for a year, which started my involvement with training and presenting. This has continued as a theme throughout my professional life as a lawyer in private practice and in-house. When practicing as a lawyer you are always in a sense presenting your advice to clients, but I seem to have taken this further during my career. From managing all the trainees in one law firm to being a professional development manager in a later in-house role I have enjoyed teaching others, and indeed learning from them.

I have been fortunate to have presented at numerous conferences and events for my firms and businesses and for the Society for Computers & Law (SCL), ITechLaw and the International Federation of Computer Law Associations (IFCLA) amongst others. All of this has given me a unique insight into how best to convey and explain technical topics to lawyers and other colleagues in ways that keeps them interested and involved – both prerequisites of learning.

I have discovered along the way what works best in terms of connecting with an audience and discussing and explaining legal, contractual and business topics. It is not in my view effective to hide behind a podium on a stage whether literally or metaphorically. I have learned the benefits and indeed necessity of interacting with colleagues and others as a part of the learning process. See, for example, my post Leave the Lectern in which I advocate for the advantages of walking amongst the audience and establishing a close relationship with them.

Training and lecturing has also encouraged me through-out my career to share my knowledge not only through the medium of talks but through articles (see Published Articles) and my regular blog Thoughts of the Week which are also available on LinkedIn under the strapline Walk the Week.

I can bring all of this experience and knowledge to bear in helping with developing and presenting effective and creative training events for your organisation, whether as a private practice law firms or in-house legal function – or a business generally wanting to better understand contractual and commercial legal matters.

In particular my roles as a partner in law firms and as a senior in-house lawyer had given me a unique insight which enables me to explain to law firms what in-house lawyers expect of them and vice versa.

I have also found that teaching is one of the best methods of learning your subject – you cannot present something effectively if you do not have real in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. The motto at the end of each page of this site Life is for Learning and I have and will continue to apply this to my life and would welcome the opportunity to help with your businesses training.

Please contact me on [email protected] if you would like further information on the training services I can provide.
