Whether it is to improve your existing role and be promoted, leave and set up your own business, or buy a car or a better house or a boat or support your children or grandchildren, life without any aims or ambitions can be really empty. And you then have nowhere to go. Once you have a dream then it can be turned into a plan and often subsequently into reality.
In the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey Habit 2 is "Begin with the end in mind". He asks "Are you - right now- who you want to be, what you dreamed you'd be doing, doing what you always wanted to do?"
This doesn't mean capturing simple perhaps selfish desires like "make more money" or trite ambitions such as "be happier" but some concrete, measurable and achievable goals to aim at. Enabling personal and business ambitions to be conceived, articulated and planned for gives our lives more purpose and direction.
Of course we may not achieve everything but having a direction to travel in produces surprisingly effective and positive results. Winston Churchill once said "Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning".
