I receive a weekly email from an American consultant usually with tips about better business practice and technology and related comments.
A recent theme was about how online learning trumped real colleges. Colleges are in effect being seen as expensive monoliths of learning. The fact that students have to borrow or work their way through colleges or universities and then in effect mortgage their future in effect devalues the experience.
It is certainly possible to debate the high cost of further education and the extent to which nation states should contribute. However that does not devalue the benefits of leaving home and going off to learn about your chosen topic, yourself and generally life at college.
I acknowledge that on line learning is a sophisticated way to impart facts and to a degree knowledge. But it is no substitute for real learning from a professor in his or her subject. And imagine a future where all the graduates we employ in business were "home taught" online from 5 to 21. How would we incorporate these young adults into work environments when they would have had no real life experience outside of the computer in their bedrooms?
Long may the real and valuable development experience of the true university continue to guide and inform each successive generation.
